The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi (Igreja de São Francisco de Assis) in Ouro Preto is a landmark of Brazilian Baroque and Rococo, designed and decorated by the sculptor and architect Aleijadinho. Its architecture is notable for its circular towers and the extensive use of soapstone, especially in the frontispiece depicting Saint Francis receiving the stigmata.
The interior is famous for the ceiling painting by Mestre Ataíde, which uses an illusionistic perspective and features figures with Brazilian ethnic traits. The church is a rare example of total integration between architectural design, sculpture, and painting. Classified as one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World, it is a protected IPHAN national monument and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ouro Preto.
