St. Mary’s Cathedral, Tokyo is a modern Roman Catholic cathedral located in Sekiguchi, Bunkyo City, Tokyo, Japan. The original church was founded in 1899 as a Gothic-style wooden structure, but it was destroyed by fire during World War II. Reconstruction began in 1955 with support from Cologne, Germany, and the new cathedral was designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange. Construction started in 1961 and was completed in 1964. The cathedral combines Western modernist architectural principles with a distinctly Japanese sense of space, and is widely regarded as one of the representative works of postwar modern architecture in Japan. The main cathedral rises to a height of 39.4 metres, while the freestanding bell tower reaches 61.6 metres.
