Pioneer Corner Buildings v1.6

This amazing example of late 1800s PNW architecture was created for my Astoria series as a near replica of the Pioneer Building in Seattle WA. This stunning piece of architecture is a prime example of cast iron architecture found all around the United States between 1860 and the early 1900s. The building comes in 4 flavors, a tall and short 90 degree, and a tall and short 45 degree.

History
Completed in 1892 following the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, the historic Pioneer Building stands as a crowning jewel of Seattle’s Pioneer Square historic district. Designed by architect Elmer H. Fisher in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the building blends heavy red brick and rough-faced Tenino sandstone with ornamental cast iron elements and decorative terra cotta. Built on the site where city founder Henry Yesler original steam sawmill stood, its dramatic arched entryway, towering central atrium, and intricate metalwork made it an immediate symbol of the city’s rapid resilience and ambition during the Klondike Gold Rush era.

The Pioneer Building reflects a broader late-19th-century architectural movement that embraced cast iron and prefabricated metal components to redefine urban facades. Pioneered in commercial hubs like New York’s SoHo district and Portland’s historic riverfront, cast iron architecture allowed architects to construct grand, highly ornate exteriors with slimmer structural piers, opening up interiors to unprecedented natural light through expansive windows. In post-fire Seattle, mixing cast iron detailing with heavy masonry provided both structural durability and an air of Victorian elegance, creating a distinct aesthetic that still defines many of the Pacific Northwest’s oldest commercial quarters.
